Welcome

A letter from Eleanor & Henry

Dear friends and family — when we sat down to write this, we kept circling back to the same thing: we have spent the better part of a decade being loved into the people we are now, mostly by you, often without your noticing. So this is, first, a thank-you. We met one rainy afternoon in a borrowed kitchen, both pretending to know what we were doing with a pie crust. Henry burned the lattice. Eleanor laughed too loudly. The pie was, eventually, fine. The years since have looked a lot like that pie — improvised, slightly singed at the edges, made better by company. On the 23rd we'd like very much to stand in front of you and say the words out loud. Bring your good shoes and your appetites. Stay late if you can. We have planned exactly the kind of evening we'd want to be invited to, and we wanted you in it. With the joy of our families,

Eleanor & Henry

The shape of the day

From the first arrivals on the lawn to the last car pulling away — the unhurried order of things.

4:00 in the afternoon

Arrival on the lawn

Lemonade and iced tea under the elms. Find your seat, find a cousin, find the shade.

4:30 in the afternoon

Ceremony in the rose garden

A short, traditional service. Officiated by Henry's uncle, who promises to keep it under twenty minutes.

5:15 in the evening

Cocktail hour on the terrace

Champagne, oysters, and a string trio. Photographs of the new couple in the orchard, if the light holds.

6:30 in the evening

Dinner in the ballroom

A family-style meal of Hudson Valley spring. Table numbers were drawn from a hat — please blame the hat.

8:00 in the evening

Toasts and cake

A handful of remarks, kept gentle. A two-tier lemon-and-elderflower cake from a friend of Eleanor's mother.

9:00 at night

Dancing

An hour of standards from the trio, then the floor opens. Aunts and uncles are encouraged to lead by example.

11:00 at night

Send-off

Sparklers on the front drive. Cars from the manor back to town until midnight; one more after that, if needed.

They lived happily ever after

Thank you for being part of the day — for the journey, the tie, the time off work, the sitter for the dog. The day is ours and yours both, and we'd like to think you'll feel that long after the cars pull away.
