Dearest ones,

A letter from Sofia & Marcus

When we sat down to write this we kept circling back to the same thing: we have spent the better part of a decade being loved into the people we are now — mostly by you, often without your noticing. So this is, first, a thank-you.

We met one rainy afternoon in a borrowed kitchen, both pretending to know what we were doing with a pie crust. Marcus burned the lattice. Sofia laughed too loudly. The years since have looked a lot like that pie — improvised, slightly singed at the edges, made better by company.

On the 12th of September we'd like very much to stand in front of you and say the words out loud. Bring your good shoes and your appetites. Stay late if you can. We have planned exactly the kind of evening we'd want to be invited to, and we wanted you in it.

with the joy of our families,

Sofia & Marcus

A short story

How we met

It was Sofia's older sister's birthday, a Sunday in February, and someone — no one will admit to it now — invited both of us to bring a pie. Marcus, who had never made one, brought an excellent lattice. Sofia, who had made hundreds, brought a slightly burnt one.

The argument moved to the porch, then to a walk, then to a series of phone calls that lasted a year. We are, on balance, still arguing about it. The pie has gotten much better.

"We are, on balance, still arguing about whose pie was better."

The shape of the day

From the first arrivals to the last car pulling away — the unhurried order of things.

4:00 in the afternoon

Arrival on the lawn

Lemonade and iced tea under the elms. Find your seat, find a cousin, find the shade.

4:30 in the afternoon

Ceremony in the boxwood garden

A short, traditional service. Officiated by Marcus's uncle, who promises to keep it under twenty minutes.

5:15 in the evening

Cocktails on the terrace

Champagne, oysters, and a string quartet. Photographs of the new couple in the orchard, if the light holds.

6:30 in the evening

Dinner in the pavilion

A family-style meal of Blue Ridge autumn. Table numbers were drawn from a hat — please blame the hat.

8:00 in the evening

Toasts & cake

A handful of remarks, kept gentle. A three-tier brown-butter cake from a friend of Sofia's mother.

8:30 in the evening

Dancing

An hour of standards from the quartet, then the floor opens. Aunts and uncles are encouraged to lead by example.

11:00 at night

Send-off

Sparklers on the front drive. Cars from the estate back to town until midnight; one more after that, if needed.

A note on gifts

Truly, your presence is gift enough — coming all this way, putting on a tie, finding a sitter for the dog. If you'd nevertheless like to mark the day in a small way, we are saving toward a first home in the valley and a honeymoon in Portugal. Either would be a kindness; neither is expected.
